- Title
The Creation of a Legend Germany Schaefer's Called Home Run.
- Authors
Schaefer, Robert H.
- Abstract
The history of baseball is rich with legends. Some are true, some are partly true, and still others are complete fabrications. No legend is more scintillating--or outrageous--than the enduring tale of Germany Schaefer's game-winning pinch-hit home run. Beyond merely winning the game, Schaefer reputedly performed a series of antics both before and following his hit. These ridiculous acts would have been immediately dismissed had they been attributed to any other player. But because Schaefer was the zaniest character ever to tread the diamond, this implausible legend has been accepted and repeated by a score of writers. What is the truth concerning Schaefer's bizarre actions? This investigation separates fact from fiction and determines exactly what Germany did, and did not do, on that day in 1906.
