The authors discuss the importance of understanding the response of the mammalian kidney to renal insults, which are generally classified as either acute kidney injury (AKI) or chronic kidney disease (CKD). They describe the occurrence and nature of acute kidney failure. They also comment on a study which evaluated the presence and severity of histopathologic changes in the kidneys of cats at each stage of CKD.
