Reports that Pharyngitis due to group A streptococcus (GAS) remains one of the most common infections occurring in childhood. Finding that the number of cases of serious postinfection sequelae has decreased markedly in industrialized countries during the past 60 years in the U.S.; Information that numerous secreted products are linked to the ability of GAS to cross tissue planes and cause serious disease; Deduction that GAS infection subunit vaccines using M proteins have advanced the farthest.
