- Authors
Cunningham, Debbie S.
- Abstract
Isidro Félix de Espinosa accompanied the expedition of Domingo Ramón from Mexico to East Texas in 1716 and recorded his observations in a diary. The journey was undertaken for the purpose of solidifying the Spanish presence in East Texas, partly by establishing missions. Previous translations of Espinosa's diary exhibit numerous divergences and errors in detail, particularly in the descriptions of flora. In addition, inadequate manuscript sources made previous translations of some passages into guesswork. The present new translation, based on better lexicographical and manuscript resources, is a corrected and much improved version. The author makes copious use of available secondary sources. The result is a new standard translation of a primary text whose context is the struggle between Spain and France in the New World.
