- Abstract
This article discusses different aspects of consumption in Europe during the 16th century using historical sources such as travel writings from French and Spanish explorers who described their journeys to North America during the 1500s. The article focuses on how the encounters with Native Americans were portrayed in the historical travel writings, how the sources reveal how the Christian religion and the European culture influenced the way the Spanish and French explorers viewed the cultures of the North American native people, and how the North American's economic utilization of resources was viewed by the Europeans. Travel writings analyzed were written by explorers including Hernán Cortés, Amerigo Vespucci, and Christóbal Colón (Christopher Columbus).
