- Abstract
The article explores U.S. popular sentiment and journalism documenting the visit of Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro II to the U.S in 1876. The author reflects on the ambivalence of Americans towards hereditary monarchy and contempt for hereditary privilege. The article discusses U.S. reaction to the visit and Pedro's evasion of formal receptions, democratic travel methods, and unofficial travel.
