- Title
THE FREEDOM TRAIN? COLD WAR PROPAGANDA AND RACIAL EQUALITY IN SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA, 1947-1948.
- Authors
Buck, Emily
- Abstract
The article discusses the ways in which the Freedom Train, a train that toured the U.S. in order to emphasize Americans' freedoms, operated as a form of Cold War-era propaganda that touted the U.S. value of freedom amidst the presence of widespread racial inequality in the country. In this sense, the author contrasts the patriotic fervor felt by those who visited the train with the poor social conditions of African Americans at this time. The author details the Train's touring of various Southern U.S. cities, where racial segregation was common, with emphasis given to its stop in Shreveport, Louisiana.
