- Abstract
This article is a review of the book, “The Ducal Forests of Northern Podlasie and Western Grodno in the 15th and 16th Centuries (Divisions, Administration, Forestry and Water Services),” edited by Jozef Sliwinski. The work, whose content was written by diverse contributors from the Institute of History at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), focuses upon the history, management and utilization of Polish ducal forest lands in and around Podlasie and Grodno in the 15th and 16th centuries. The book is divided into three main chapters with numerous sub-chapters in each. Although the reviewer acknowledges the work as an important addition to an under-studied field of Polish history, she finds many errors and faults within the work, among them: the authors posit that the 1379 treaty between Lithuania and the Teutonic Order also concerned lands around the Brzozowka, Biebrza and Niemen rivers--which is factually untrue; accurate maps and a geographical index are lacking; details concerning the two forests and rivers (formation, geology, hydrography, climate, tree types, etc.) are needlessly duplicated; there are mistakes with respect to geography/historical geography; some 15th-century documents, as well as their Latin translation, are incorrectly understood/translated.
