- Abstract
This article discusses 20th century Mexican artist Martín Ramírez and his works related to Mexican culture, history, and collective memory. The author comments on Ramírez's upbringing in Mexico, including his experiences involved in the Mexican Revolution in 1910 as well as the Guerra Cristera (Cristero War) from 1926-1929, including their influences on his artwork. His immigration from Mexico to California in the mid-20th century and his eventual institutionalization in various mental institutions is also examined.
