- Title
Re-Framing Britain's Past Paul Sandby and the picturesque tour of Scotland.
- Authors
Wyld, Helen
- Abstract
The article discusses English artist Paul Sandy and his time spent as draughtsman for the Military Survey of Scotland in the 1740s. The author suggests that Sandby used his drawings of Scotland to make etchings of Scottish landscapes for the print series "Virtuosi's Museum" in the 1780s and that both sets of landscapes demonstrate control over the landscape. Also discussed are William Gilpin's picturesque theory, ancient warrior poet Ossian, and James MacPherson's book "Poems of Ossian."
