- Abstract
The article focuses on the reliefs and busts created by ivory-carver David Le Marchand and how he served as the precursor by a generation of the great 18th century school of English portrait sculpture. Information is presented on Le Marchand's "Bust of an Unknown Nobleman," and a bust representing Anne Nelthorpe. It describes how Le Marchand incorporated realistic details to his ivory carvings. It explores the similarities of Le Marchand's attention to detail with the qualities of rococo sculpture.
