- Title
The Elephant in the Living Room: Jan Steen's Fantasy Interior as Parodic Portrait of the Schouten Family.
- Authors
Cloutier-Blazzard, Kimberlee A.
- Abstract
The article discusses Dutch artist Jan Steen's 1660s painting "Fantasy Interior" and suggests that it depicts the family of Dutch aristocrat Gerrit Schouten the Younger. The author analyzes Steen's depiction of the Schoutens as aristocratic and suggests that Steen parodies the theme of social class without depicting the Schoutens in an unflattering manner. Other topics include Steen's relationship with the Schouten family, Schouten's brewery The Elephant and country house Dampegeest, and the genre of pastoral portraiture.
