- Abstract
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by a dysregulated immune response to infection that can lead to organ failure and death. It affects nearly 50 million people worldwide each year, with vulnerable populations in low-income and developing countries being disproportionately affected. The development of new treatments for sepsis is a global healthcare priority. Sodium ascorbate, a pH-balanced formulation of vitamin C, has shown promise as a novel therapy for sepsis. Researchers at The Florey have conducted successful animal and clinical trials, and a large interdisciplinary research program called MEGASCORES has been established to further investigate the potential of sodium ascorbate. The program has received a $4.9 million grant from the Australian Federal Government's Medical Research Future Fund. The ultimate goal is to create an affordable and accessible sepsis therapy that can be administered in healthcare settings worldwide.
