- Title
AFP in amniotic fluid.
- Abstract
The article presents an analysis on the presence of AFP in amniotic fluid. The mean intra-pair difference in cord blood AFP concentration in dizygotic twins is significantly greater than in monozygotic twins. This finding points to the fact that the concentration of this component is genetically determined. After birth AFP disappears rapidly from the blood during the first few weeks of life. Abnormal levels of AFP in cord blood have been found in certain pregnancy disorders. The major part of amniotic fluid proteins comes from the maternal circulation, but AFP represents a fetal protein in the amniotic fluid.
