- Abstract
Many foreign reading rooms and English-language periodicals published locally also encouraged the discovery of the culture of their host countries by organizing lectures and conferences, producing erudite guidebooks, publicizing cultural events, or sponsoring tours of the most important sites. Looking at the lists of periodicals available in English-language reading rooms in Paris and in French provincial towns, Colligan discovers a large number of British and American periodicals, some of which were quite niche and hard to come by. In Boulogne-sur-Mer, Merridew's English reading room advertised a large selection of London dailies, along with French, Irish, Scottish and Indian papers, as well as some of the English-language press published in France and Belgium. Some of the reading rooms that catered mostly for British travellers, along with the English-language press sponsored by these reading rooms, encouraged their subscribers to broaden their cultural horizons by suggesting different itineraries in Europe and beyond.
