- Abstract
Acetaminophen is a widely available, non-narcotic analgesic which is approved by the FDA for use in patients of almost every age. When used in moderation, acetaminophen is very safe drug, but chronic use in higher dosages may have severe physical consequences. The available literature suggests that some of the mechanism of action of acetaminophen may be associated with an addictive potential. Here we report a case of a child with chronic pain syndrome, who abused acetaminophen similar to any other psychoactive substance. Further, the management issues involved in this case provide an insight into various factors which could trigger and perpetuate such an abuse. In conclusion, various health professionals are advised to be cautious while prescribing such a common medicine with ample education to caregivers.
