- Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: In contemporary dental practice, adequate isolation of the working field is an important prerequisite for maintenance of a dry aseptic field, reduction of the potential risk of transferring infective agents between dentist and patient; prevention of aspiration of instruments, materials, endodontic irrigants, protection and retraction of gingiva, oral soft tissues, thus ensures patient comfort during dental procedures. OptraDam Plus is the new isolation system marketed worldwide in 2007 by Ivoclar Vivadent company. It has advantages over conventional rubber dam, like easy application, improved elastic resiliency of the latex material to overcome contact points easily, which facilitates isolation. The purpose of the study is to compare the isolation efficacy of Conventional rubber dam and OptraDam Plus systems in pediatric patients during dental procedures in terms of isolation quality from leakage timing using 5% dextrose solution and saline, pain perception from WONG-BAKER Faces Pain Rating Scale and comfort level from questionnaire. Methodology and Study Design: A pilot study to evaluate and compare the isolation and isolation efficacy of conventional rubber dam and OptraDam Plus systems in 12 children (6 in each group) aged 6-12 years displaying Frankl behavior rating scale 3 and 4, indicated for restoration of tooth in both mandibular primary and permanent molars without previous experience of undergoing the dental procedure with a rubber dam or OptraDam Plus system. Children with latex allergy, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, mouth breathing, and gingival inflammation are excluded from the study. Results and Conclusion: Study in progress.
