- Title
Plant biosensor could help African farmers fight parasitic 'witchweed'.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the strategy developed by engineering and biology professors Alexei Savchenko and Peter McCourt of the University of Toronto in Ontario to help African farmers fight the Striga parasitic plants. Savchenko and McCourt found that farmers can protect their crops from the parasitic plants by spraying the ground with a chemical similar to the plant hormones that cause them to germinate. The parasitic plants can affect crops such as corn, rice and sorghum.
