- Abstract
The article focuses on teaching the literary braille code to preservice teachers in the U.S. It cites the different approaches to braille instruction by university programs, which includes a single stand-alone online or face-to-face course. It presents information on the development of a National Literary Braille Competency Test (NLBCT) in the 1990s. An overview of a study undertaken by the Personnel Preparation Division of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired as a first step in the development of voluntary standards for the minimum level of braille skills that individuals preparing to become teachers of visually impaired students or vision rehabilitation therapists is offered.
