- Abstract
The article discusses efforts by the French government in the 18th century to gather business intelligence to initiate a silk-industry. In 1749, the French Bureau of Commerce contracted experimental scientist Jean-Antoine Nollet to travel to the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia to gather information about its silk production. He traveled to Italy under the guise of meeting and debating with Italian philosophers. Topics include the Enlightenment, 18th-century travel and grand tours, and technology transfer.
