- Abstract
The article presents a brief history of the cable railway of Temple Street Cable Railway in Los Angeles, California. Cable cars operated first in San Francisco, but there were cable car networks in twenty-seven other cities in the U.S. Cable cars outperformed streetcars drawn by horses or mules because of its speed, safety and cleanliness. Although cable railways eventually proved uneconomical compared to electric trolleys, they were an attractive option where land developers confronted steep hills. By 1890, ten trains where providing transit not only for new residents in the hill but also for excursionists headed toward Coleville. During this time the Temple Street Cable Railway was the best patronized streetcar line in town.
