- Abstract
The article reveals the molecular cloning and fine mapping of API5L1, a novel human gene strongly related to an antiapoptotic gene. Apoptosis or programmed cell death is a physiological form of cell death that occurs in embryonic development and organ formation. It is characterized by biochemical and morphological changes such as DNA fragmentation and cell volume shrinkage. It occurs after the removal of extracellular growth factors or cytokines, thus the cell viability is dependent on the balance between the factors that favor apoptosis and those signals which favor survival.
