- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the birth of photojournalism in the U.S. The author focuses on the battle of Antietam, Maryland, in September 1862, in which the Union commander George McClellan's army met the Confederate general Robert E. Lee's soldiers. Attention is paid to photographers James F. Gibson and Alexander Gardner who were traveling with the Union army. The photographers documented the dead soldiers and the images were displayed to the American public.
