- Title
LITHIUM: Africa.
- Abstract
A report by rights group Global Witness highlights the negative consequences of the rush to find and mine lithium in Africa. The demand for renewable energy technology, such as electric vehicles and their batteries, has led to an increased demand for lithium. Global Witness investigated three emerging lithium mines in Zimbabwe, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and found evidence of corruption, environmental issues, and social problems. The report warns that the rush for lithium in Africa risks repeating the exploitation of African nations for their minerals.
