- Abstract
The article describes a sanderling, or Calidris alba, scavenging a northern kelp crab, or Pugettia producta, preyed upon by a foraging western gull, or Larus occidentalis on the evening of April 3, 2011 in Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County, California. Topics covered include the normal foraging behavior of the sanderling, scavenging dead prey from a predator or another scavenger and the switch of the bird behavior from scavenging to kleptoparasitism.
