- Abstract
This paper aims at articulating the Right to Memory and the Right to the City. The discussion is based on a critical analysis of several experiences of memorialization in South African metropolitan areas using a series of analytical readings from the fields of urban studies and of memory studies. The paper thus analyzes the status of ordinary neighborhood memories in local public policies as well as their relevance for urban social movements. The main purpose of the paper is to question the assumption currently promoted under the banner of the Right to the City that the preservation of ordinary urban memories is a positive and necessary thing.
