- Abstract
The article discusses environmental research that compared fecal indicator bacteria (fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and enterococci) concentrations with numerous organic wastewater chemicals and certain bacterial genes as indicators of fecal contamination in water samples collected from 18 surface water drinking water intakes. The pollutants discovered included human pharmaceuticals, chemical indicators of wastewater treatment plant effluent, and veterinary antibiotics. The esp gene and carbamazepine were used to indicate human-source fecal pollution.
