- Abstract
Using historical source information from the New York state Probation Department, the article focuses on the lives of five residents of Harlem in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the subjects considered include the urban experiences of African Americans during the period, African American culture and its social elites, interpersonal relationships, institutionalized racism, and African American social culture including housing, speakeasies, churches, social clubs, and fraternal organizations.
