- Abstract
Objective: to describe the effect of pelvic floor muscle training protocols used for the treatment of female sexual dysfunctions. Methods: The electronic search was carried out in December 2021, in the MEDLINE/Pubmed and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) databases. The controlled descriptors selected in the MeSH were "exercise therapy" and "sexual dysfunction, physiological". The delimited uncontrolled descriptors were "pelvic floor muscle training" and "female sexual dysfunction". Studies that dealt with pelvic floor muscle training as a physical therapy intervention for the treatment of female sexual dysfunctions, in English and Portuguese published until 2021, were included. Results: Review articles, theses, dissertations and articles that addressed on neurological pathologies. The twelve articles included analyzed training protocols for the pelvic floor muscles supervised and at home, and regarding intervention protocols, these were associated with other interventions such as electrostimulation, myofascial release, use of lubricants and vaginal moisturizers. Final considerations: pelvic floor muscle training performed both supervised and at home proved to be viable and effective in improving the sexual function of healthy women as well as women with pelvic floor disorders.
