- Abstract
The article discusses the politics and government of Venezuela under the leadership of Hugo Chávez. Elections of 2008 and 2009 are described as events through which Chávez received a considerable level of public support for his plan to rule indefinitely over Venezuela while refashioning it to conform to his visions of Latin American socialism. The significant Venezuelan opposition to this project, and how such tensions are likely to play out in terms of Venezuelan democracy, are analyzed. It is said that the rule of law is weak in Venezuela, and public officials are not subject to public accountability.
