- Abstract
The Byzantines have been fairly interesting about life after death. They have produced various thoughts on the fate of the soul. While creating these ideas, they expanded the function of burial rites for the salvation of the soul. At this point, the most important element was funeral rituals. It was considered to ensure that the deceased didn't have difficult processes in afterlife while these funeral rituals were being held. This ritual performed was not only written with text, but was reflected in various elements in Byzantine Art. Manuscripts and murals of churches are the main ones. The scenes depicted usually included the funeral procession, deathbed, the mourning ceremony and the placement of the grave. While he/she was focused on the deceased person, who was generally lying on his deathbed in the early stages and the figures who grieved for him, he/she gained a several dimension with the diversification of the stages of the ritual over time. As a matter of fact, by the middle and late periods, the number of the figures increased, the incense and incensory entered the stages and the function of the monks in the stage mountedIn this regard, the Byzantines did not break with the ancient tradition and carried out their funeral rituals within the framework of Christianity.
