- Abstract
Peter Sacks's exhibition at Sperone Westwater in New York showcases his densely layered paintings that explore texture, form, chaos, and cohesion. The paintings are constructed from birch blocks of various sizes, which are joined together to create monumental works. Sacks repurposes scavenged objects, such as doilies, jewelry, and kitchen utensils, and fixes them onto the blocks with archival glue. The resulting compositions resemble circuit boards made from discarded items. The color palette is mostly austere, with dark paint covering the objects, although some works incorporate splashes of orange, green, and red. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the tension between what is visible and what is obscured within the paintings.
