- Title
The Release of Julian Assange: Plea Deals and Dark Legacies.
- Authors
Kampmark, Binoy
- Abstract
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has reached a plea deal with the U.S. Department of Justice. He will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information under the Espionage Act of 1917. This charge carries a fine of up to $10,000 and/or up to 10 years in prison. Assange's release comes after spending 62 months in Belmarsh Prison. The plea deal raises concerns about press freedom and the potential impact on publishers who publish U.S. national security information. It also suggests that the Espionage Act has gained a global reach, making it a weapon against publishers outside the United States.
