- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Complete patellar tendon ruptures are relatively rare, especially in patients without underluying systemic disease. Predisposing factors, the guides of good practice, rehabilitation protocols and expectations for recovery are still not adequately recognize. Questions related operational techniques, time permit for full weightbearing and mobilization are still controversial. METHODS: We present a series of 6 patients without associated systemic disease with acute patellar tendon ruptures which was immediately surgically treated. All patients were men, and they all underwent primary reparations transpatelar fixation sutures . For all patients was applied the same postoperative rehabilitation protocol with an immediate full support of and early controlled mobilization of the knee. After the surgery was performed for knee joint orthosis in all cases. Mean follow-up was 15,4 months. There was no failure of repair. All patients had excellent range of motion and strength preoperatively regained the level of activity following an average of 17.3 weeks after the injury. CONCLUSION: Acute patellar tendon ruptures are relatively rare but can be serious injuries in an active patient if not recognized and treated properly. Immediate surgical repair is the treatment of choice. If a goal is a reliable fixation during surgery surgeons should not hesitate to early full support of and controlled mobilization of the knee. This kind of approach allows of good functional results and return to the level of activities before the injury. Keywords: patellar tendon rupture, transpatellar fixation
