- Abstract
Introduction: Due to the reduction in the availability of antibiotic-growth promoters in chickens, poultry producers have sought additives to supplement the food, which stimulate the immune system of their birds. Some ß-glucans have been shown to improve gastrointestinal health in chickens when they are challenged by bacteria. Aim: To review the literature on the basic biology of ß-glucans and their use as immunomodulators and growth promoters in chickens. Results and conclusion: ß-glucans increase the flow of dendritic cells, increase the phagocytic capacity of macrophages, and increase the antibody titer after vaccination. Therefore, they function as an anti-inflammatory immunomodulator drug. These substances can provide tools for producers to try to reduce or eliminate the use of poultry growthpromoting antibiotics.
