- Authors
Moscovici, Claudia
- Abstract
The article attempts to analyze the novel "Le Rouge et le Noir," by Stendhal. It examines the nature of Stendhal's temporal displacement as encoded both thematically and structurally in the novel. It focuses on the parts of the novel which describe the relationship between the ambitious lower-middle-class hero, Julien, and Madame de Rînal, the simple and inexperienced wife of the provincial mayor. The employment of Julien as tutor to the mayor's children led to his romantic involvement with Madame de Rînal.
