- Abstract
A critique is presented of the short story "Berenice" by Edgar Allan Poe, focusing on Poe's depiction of the character Egaeus' focused interest, contemplation, and aesthetics. The psychological aspects of modernist literature, Poe's attitude toward readers' judgment, and pragmatism in 20th century American literature are discussed, as well as the history of 18th century aesthetic philosophy.
