- Abstract
The article presents information on several tools and techniques for marine biologists along with information on philosophy, procedures, and problems of the national marine data base in the U.S. The expendable bathythermograph (XBT) can be used to measure ocean temperature to a depth of several hundred meters by saving in fuel and man-hours. It is stated that the telemetry techniques can be used to study animals that spend some of their time on the water surface including sharks, porpoises, and whales. The National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and the World Data Center A--Oceanography (WDC-A) were created to manage and organize data collected at sea. It is stated that a biologist can take great advantage of NODC as the data are in the data base and in standard format.
