- Abstract
The radiative recombination of a free electron into the 2p3/2 state of bare, highly-charged ions and the subsequent Lyman–α1 (2p3/2→1s1/2) decay are studied theoretically. Special attention is paid to the linear polarization of the characteristic X-ray radiation. In particular, it is found that the angular distribution of the Lyman–α1 line polarization is remarkably modified by the interference between the leading electric dipole E1 decay channel and the – much weaker – magnetic quadrupole M2 term. Relativistic calculations have been carried out for the electron capture into bare uranium ion for a wide range of projectile energies.
