- Abstract
Deformation- and load-bearing behaviour of glue-laminated-timber under load entry by fully-threaded-screws For some time past fully-threaded-screws are not anymore used for fixing but also as reinforcement and exclusive connecting elements of structural timber parts. In this context particularly long screws ( l > 300 mm) compared to conventional applications are deployed. They work similar to steel reinforcement in concrete carrying tensile and compression forces and bind structural elements together. Timber and screws together may be described as a composite material like concrete, however with an anisotropic matrix with different strength and stiffness in the different dimensions of the material-matrix. Depending on the position of a screw and their inclination to grain different load-bearing effects arise which were hard to verify until now. Investigations of bond behaviour of fully-threaded-screws brought in timber carried out by the Chair of Structures and Structural Design and the Institute of Material Sciences (ibac) of Aachen University with the help of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) allowed the visualization of strain and deformation distribution on the surfaces of structural timber elements. In difference to strain-measuring-gauges which give just spotty information the DIC-method gives a coherent view on the strain and deformation distribution of individual timber specimens and that way a visualization of the actual and local loadbearing behaviour of screw-reinforced-timber.
