- Abstract
Despite being a popular topic in literature and movies, boarding schools have not received much attention in educational science in Germany. The article tries to put together the existing scientific knowledge and provides an overview of the situation of boarding schools in Germany. Even if boarding schools in Germany are not as widespread as boarding schools in other countries such as England, with 260 institutions and with nearly 22 000 student places they have a certain level of significance in Germany's educational system. A closer look shows a broad variety among boarding schools – which are not only located in the private sector. Main differences exist between boarding schools combining schooling and housing in one common place and special boarding houses, which are not linked to just one school. Furthermore one can distinguish between boarding schools that are open for all children (whose parents can afford the fees) and boarding schools that intend to promote the highly gifted and may only be attended by those who meet certain selective criteria (for example in sports or music).
