- Abstract
The study "The trafficking of white women in Italy and Great Britain. From associationism to the League of Nations (1885-1946)" by Sara Ercolani examines the "white slave trade" in Italy and Great Britain from 1885 to 1946. The author argues that the trade of prostitutes was a real phenomenon that was associated with the increase in long-distance labor migration. However, there is little evidence of the existence of global criminal networks. The study focuses on the mechanisms that made women and children dependent on pimps, such as false marriage promises and job offers. The investigation is mainly based on the documents of the "National Vigilance Association" in London and the Italian Committee against the "tratta delle bianche" in Rome. The study also sheds light on the international treaties of 1904 and 1910, which aimed to protect against sexual abuse and cross-border human trafficking.
