- Abstract
The article analyzes how the Hessian Ministry of Education attempted establish a mandate for a new set of democratic values in Hesse in the immediate postwar period (c. 1946–1951). In doing so, I consider the concerns of the psychologist Brigitte Schliebe-Lippert (1898–1993), who headed the Teacher Training Department in the Hessian Ministry of Education from 1946 until her retirement in 1963. On the one hand, Schliebe-Lippert's position is exceptional, as a woman in a leading position at the ministry at the time. On the other hand, her contribution as a psychologist with a "Habilitation" from Giessen university (1932) is noteworthy, since she advocated in the postwar period the thesis that the efforts for reeducation of the American military government were to be based primarily in scientific psychology and pedagogy. This article investigates how Schliebe-Lippert positioned her version of developmental psychology in the cooperation with the American military authorities. Moreover, I query to what extent "scientificity" in general and social and human sciences as psychology in particular were supposed to form the groundwork during the postwar period for the creation and enactment of new democratic values. I analyze Schliebe-Lippert's positions in the context of German discussions about teacher education and against the background of her activities during National Socialism. The article is based on Schliebe-Lippert's papers and archival sources on teacher education in the Hessian State Archives, a variety of other archival sources in Frankfurt and Mainz, and published material.
