- Abstract
The work by Christin Hansen titled "Wilde" in the German discourse of identity from 1830-1870 examines the representations and notions of the "wild" in German travel reports and novels. The author systematically compares stereotypes of "Indians," "Bedouins," and "Cossacks" and shows that these depictions had little to do with social reality, but rather were projections of German authors. Hansen also identifies a historical development in which a national narrowing began after 1848, making Germans appear as the better colonizers. The research findings are convincing, however, there are points of criticism regarding the elaboration and linguistic inaccuracies in the work.
