- Abstract
Objective: Since the earliest known periods of Turkish history, Turks have been interested in many sports branches. Wrestling is one of the most well-known sports among these sports. Wrestling has been known as the ancestral sport of the Turks throughout history. This is also the case today. It is known that wrestling is performed in ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, circumcisions in the Turkish tradition. Throughout Turkish history, many states have organized wrestling tournaments, opened many wrestling tekkes, and even many Turkish rulers have personally wrestled. In this study, the feelings and thoughts of the Turkish people about wrestling, their ancestor sport, were investigated. Material and Methods: In the study, the Guttman Attitude Scale for the Sport of Wrestling, which was developed by Bardakçı and Caz and consists of 10 items, and the personal information form prepared by the researcher were used. The research was applied to individuals (sedentary) who are far from sports. A total of 143 volunteer individuals, including 62 women and 81 men, participated in the study. The participants were provided with online survey system. The results were evaluated with t test and ANOVA test. Results: As a result of the t-test conducted to compare the difference in the gender status of the participants, a significant difference was observed in the first 8 items of the scale, while the "wrestling sport found in the last 2 items is very important" and "I consider the sport of wrestling unnecessary." There was no significant difference in the items. In the comparison conducted on the professional status of the individuals participating in the study, no significant differences were found between the answers given by the individuals doing different professions to the scale questions. Conclusion: As a result of the research, a literature review was conducted, but it was found that there were not many studies conducted to examine the attitudes of the public about wrestling. Studies on people's attitudes towards the sport of wrestling should be increased.
