- Title
Mental Illness and the Monstrous Mother: A Comparison of Representation in The Babadook and Lights Out.
- Authors
Riggs, Elizabeth E.
- Abstract
The article compares the representation of mental illness and the monstrous mother in David F. Sandberg's horror films "The Babadook" and "Lights Out." Focus is given on the portrayal of abjection and the representation of the archaic mother through the power of Sophie and Amelia over their children, Sophie's creation of another personality, and moments of darkness in the films. The authors discuss repressed feelings of depression and anger as manifestations of double personality.
