- Abstract
"Unfree Markets: The Slaves' Economy and the Rise of Capitalism in South Carolina" by Justine Hill Edwards is a significant study that explores the economic activities of enslaved people in South Carolina from the colonial period to the Civil War. The author argues that slaves actively participated in market activities, selling produce and staples, hiring themselves out for odd jobs, and even purchasing goods and their own freedom in some cases. While these entrepreneurial activities provided a degree of independence and a buffer against the harsh effects of slavery, they ultimately strengthened the institution of slavery. The book is thoroughly researched and contributes to the growing literature on slavery and capitalism in the American South. However, some critics point out the need for further investigation into regional variations and the representativeness of the evidence presented.
