- Abstract
When conceiving a child, the age of the paternal contributor is as important as the age of the maternal contributor. Fathers age 40 and older must be informed that they have a higher risk of contributing mutated sperm. It is important for childbirth educators to know about birth defects associated with paternal age prior to conception. Fathers over forty need to be prepared for the possibility of producing a child whose physical appearance at birth, medical needs, and family's emotional adjustments are a result of mutated sperm.
