An essay is presented on the Independent Sharia Panel (ISP) of the Lagos State in Nigeria as of October 2011, focusing on its role as a private arbitration tribunal which settles disputes under Islamic law. It states that the ISP was formed because the use of Islamic law in the courts in the Lagos State has fallen dramatically over the years in favor of the Yoruba customary law and English law.
