- Abstract
This study examines the effects on social interaction and language development in role plays. The plays are not the free activities children themselves play during pre-school-service, but are the activities involved in formal or informal education system. They currently take place a great deal in the curriculum of pre-service teaching programs as well as being a prolific teaching method in formal education. Plays, which improve children's faculties and abilities in many ways, serve like a rich source of development. Today there are many kinds of plays having different training and improving aspects. The role plays selected for scrutiny have proved that they contribute to the immediate social and languagedevelopment of children. Since the plays need at least two partners to perform, they likely create social interactions which eventually lead to dialog and communication between partners. Thus, children learning verbal and nonverbal communication improve speaking abilities. During the social interaction and communication, some other language abilities develop as well. These abilities are the linguistic and grammatical developments as a consequence of cognitive process. Plays especially during the signifying era cause concept acquiring from concrete to abstract and contribute much to symbol acquiring. The role plays have other benefits for children such as social and individual development.
